No fewer than 10 persons have been confirmed dead, while three others were injured in an accident that occurred along the Lagos-Badagry expressway on Tuesday.
Confirming the accident, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, in a statement on Wednesday, said three of the deceased persons were male adults, four females, two female children and one male child.
“In response to some distress calls received through the 767 and 112 toll-free lines at 23.07hrs, LASEMA activated its Dolphin Response Team from Igando Base.
“On arrival at the scene, it was discovered that a bus, registration number BDG 342 FS, with passengers coming from the eastern part of the country, rammed into a parked truck.
“Further investigations revealed that the truck, registration unknown, which was laden with granite, was parked on the road, shutting down about half of the carriageway,” said the LASEMA statement.
It added, “The bus, which was on top speed, rammed into the parked truck from behind, killing 10 people instantly, including a child.”
He added that three people were critically injured alongside the 10 people who lost their lives.
The agency disclosed that the injured persons had been rushed to the hospital.
“The injured passengers who were reportedly rescued were taken to a nearby hospital by the officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps before the arrival of the agency.
“The 10 commodities have been bagged and handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit. The recovery operation is still in progress while relevant authorities and responders are on the ground,” said the statement.
