Court adjourns suit challenging Osun LG poll to Jan. 17

The Osun State High Court sitting in Ile-Ife has adjourned the hearing on a case challenging the February 22 local government elections in the state.

The case, filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and 19 disqualified candidates, challenges the upcoming elections, claiming irregularities and exclusion from the process.

The plaintiffs are calling for the cancellation of the election notice published on July 18, 2024, and the inclusion of disqualified candidates if the elections proceed.

During the hearing, the All Peoples Party (APP) sought to join the case. However, the State Attorney General’s representative requested more time to respond.

The counsel for the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) proposed an out-of-court settlement, suggesting the withdrawal of some claims in exchange for reconsideration of the candidates’ disqualification.

The plaintiffs, led by APC counsel Muhydeen Adeoye, are set to discuss the settlement proposal with their clients before the next hearing.

The court will reconvene on January 17, 2025, to address the pending matters or hear a settlement update.
