Debate and Lead initiative to empower 1,000 OAU undergraduates through leadership and civic engagement

In a pioneering effort to develop the next generation of Nigerian leaders, Peter Oyewole, convener of the Debate and Lead initiative with support from Leap Africa, is set to launch the OAU Debate Challenge & Leadership Training 2024.

This ambitious project aims to engage and empower 1,000 undergraduates at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), fostering leadership skills, civic responsibility, and critical thinking through a series of dynamic activities and training sessions.

Mr. Peter Oyewole, the convener of this ambitious project, emphasized the critical need for youth engagement in leadership and civic responsibilities. "We have observed a noticeable leadership gap among Nigerian youth. They often lack the necessary skills and knowledge to advocate for their rights and drive positive change within their communities," he said. "This project is designed to bridge that gap by providing a platform for students to develop these essential skills."

The event, scheduled from June 20th to June 27th, 2024, will feature a multi-stage debate competition, starting with an interfaculty contest. The top teams will then compete in a final round, showcasing their understanding of civic issues and government-related topics. The culmination of the event will be a leadership training session for the general Great Ife students, focusing on advanced leadership skills, conflict resolution, and effective communication.

"We have designed this program to ensure that it not only highlights the intellectual capabilities of our students but also equips them with practical skills necessary for leadership," said Mr. Ajayi Oluwagbemiga, the project manager, in a phone conversation. "Our aim is to create a ripple effect where these students will go on to inspire and lead positive changes in their respective communities."

Objectives and Expected Outcomes

The primary objectives of the Great OAU Debate Challenge & Leadership Training are to:

Enhance leadership skills among 1,000 OAU students through structured debates and training sessions.

Promote civic engagement by encouraging students to actively participate in discussions on government and societal issues.

Foster an environment of intellectual growth and constructive dialogue, paving the way for future leaders who are well-equipped to address Nigeria’s challenges.
