School resumption: Oyo Govt wants improved students’ turnout

The Oyo State Government says it observed low student participation in the first week of classes resuming, in the third period of the 2021-2022 academic session.

This is contained in a joint statement issued in Ibadan on Friday by Mr. Rahman Abdu-Raheem, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, and Dr. Nureni Adeniran, Executive Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board.

While monitoring the resumption of schools, Abdu-Raheem expressed optimism that low student participation in most of the schools visited would improve the following week.

The commissioner said the low turnout seen was an indication that teachers should take better approaches, with good rapport with students.

“This will bring the minds of young people closer to the school system; Parents must also work with the state government in promoting positive learning in their children and wards.

“It was observed that the teachers of all the monitored schools were massively on the ground, but with low participation of the students.”

Abdu-Raheem said the current administration had zero tolerance for poor exam practice.

He urged principals and teachers to be cautious, adding that there were various sanctions awaiting defiance.

In addition, Adeniran called on public elementary school teachers to start teaching immediately.

He exhorted them to make every effort to complement the efforts of the current administration in order to achieve quality education in the state.

The head of SUBEB said that a whole monitoring team will be deployed in public primary schools on Monday, demanding that teachers love their students.

“This will attract students’ interest in the teaching and learning processes,” Adeniran said.

Some of the schools visited are, Olubadan High School; Ibadan, Adekile; Goodwill Secondary School, Aperin; Aperin Boys High School, CAC High School, Aperin Oniyere; and Government Secondary School, Aperin, all in Ibadan.
