Rice dealer in court over alleged N3.6m fraud

A 33-year -old rice dealer, Portia Adesanmi, on Tuesday, appeared before an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun for an alleged N3.6 million fraud.

Adesanmi, whose address was not provided, is facing a charge of fraud, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the defendant committed the fraud offence in August 2019 at Oja-Tuntun Market, Ile-Ife.

Osanyintuyi said that the defendant obtained 161 bags of rice valued N3,696,000, from Mrs Omolade Oyetoro that she would pay after sales, a representation she knew was false.

He alleged that the defendant stole the 161 bags of rice from the defendant.

Osanyintuyi said the fraud offence contravened Sections 383, 390(9) and 419 of the Criminal  Law of Osun, 2002.

Defence Counsel, Mr Ola Ibrahim, urged the court to grant his client bail in liberal terms.

He promised that his client would not jump bail, but would produce substantial sureties.

The Magistrate, Mr Joseph Owolawi, ordered that the defendant should be remanded in ‘A’ Division Police Station pending the ruling of her bail.

Owolawi adjourned the fraud case until May 12, for ruling on the bail application.
