Recognise opposition roles for democratic balance, IPAC tells Sanwo-Olu

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Lagos State, has urged Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to recognise and respect the role of opposition parties as critical stakeholders in maintaining democratic balance, accountability and progress.

In a statement issued on Monday in Lagos, the Council’s Publicity Secretary, Mr James Adeshina, emphasised the importance of inclusive governance and wider political participation.

“We are calling on the government to acknowledge and respect the role of opposition parties as essential contributors to democratic balance, accountability, and progress.

“A healthy democracy thrives on the recognition, inclusion, and active participation of all political parties.

“It is imperative for the ruling party to dispel growing concerns and perceptions of a drift toward a one-party system,” Adeshina said.

He explained that IPAC, as a statutory political advisory body, considered it necessary to offer guidance in the interest of democratic growth and good governance in the state.

“As a democratic institution and statutory political advisory body committed to strengthening and deepening democracy in Nigeria, IPAC Lagos State considers it both necessary and timely to offer constructive guidance to the Lagos State Government.

“Governance must remain people-oriented, inclusive, and participatory.

“The government exists by the mandate of the people and must, therefore, govern in their best interest at all times,” he said.

According to him, IPAC leadership under the re-elected Chairman, Mrs Temilola Akinade, will take a constructive approach in ensuring the government remain accountable.

He also called on the state government to show genuine commitment to its 2026 budget tagged “Budget of Shared Prosperity”, through effective implementation.

“IPAC Lagos State calls on the government to demonstrate sincerity and commitment to the theme and objectives of the 2026 Budget (Budget of Shared Prosperity) by ensuring its full and effective implementation.

“Projects and policies arising from the budget should be people-centered and impactful, addressing both immediate and long-term needs.

“Priority should be given to initiatives that deliver measurable socio-economic benefits across all sectors,” he said.

He further highlighted the importance of sustained investment in human capital development, particularly among young people as a means of tackling unemployment and encouraging innovation.

He stressed that strategic emphasis on education , skills development, entrepreneurship and capacity building would not only reduce unemployment but also promote social stability innovation and moral growth within society.

“Strengthening youth engagement and empowerment remains a critical pathway to building a more secure, productive, and value-driven Lagos State,” he added.

Adeshina reaffirmed IPAC’s commitment to constructive engagement and collaboration with relevant stakeholders toward achieving a more inclusive and prosperous Lagos State.
