WAEC releases 2020 results, withholds over 200,000

The West Africa Examination Council has released results of the May/June 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), with, 1,003,668 candidates representing 65. 24 per cent obtaining credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

The Head, National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Mr. Patick Areghan announced the release of the result at a news briefing in Lagos.

He noted that the performance of candidates in this year’s examination was an improvement on that of last year which was 64. 18 per cent.

Mr Areghan attributed the improvements in the performance of candidates in this year’s examination on a number of issues including the engagement of students in online teaching by some schools, parents ability to monitor their wards closely during the lockdown which made them study hard and the social distancing in the examinations halls.

The Head of National office of WAEC in Nigeria however, announced that all the candidates that contracted the COVID-19 infection during the conduct of the examination in some states were able to write all their papers and they all recovered fully from the deadly infection.

Mr. Areghan urged all candidates to access their results from their school authorities.

He however, noted that not less than ten states that were still owing WAEC would not have the results of their students released until they pay.

Out of the total number of candidates that sat the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, the results of 215,149 candidates, representing 13. 98 per cent are withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.

Overall, 1,538,445 students sat for the exam, out of 1,549,740 who registered.

Out of the candidates, 780,660 were male and 757,785 were females.
