E-LEARNING: Pathway to Educational Progress

The rapid growth of ICT, especially the Internet opens the possibility of new teaching and learning process. The concept of traditional education has changed entirely within the last couple of years.

The e-learning approach has internationally been deemed necessary to enable twenty first century learners adapt to global challenges.

This present situation of global pandemic with Federal government of Nigeria declaring a total lockdown of schools in all states in the country, the need to have access to quality e -learning method in situations with mobility restriction needs to be put in place in order to enhance the educational process and to provide continuous learning for learners. 

Candidates who were preparing to sit for their West African Examination Council (WAEC) have been left with no choice than to stay at home, as some were undergoing tutorials before the global pandemic.

Also, learners in primary and secondary schools in some states are yet to write their Second term examination while some already started but are yet to finish. This creates a danger and threat to educational aims and objectives.

There are lots of challenges that would be faced in implementing e-learning from the perspective of both the learners and the teachers. Several students and teachers will be posed with physical infrastructure threats like easy access to computers, access to good browsing phone, accessible, reliable bandwidth with a good network and affordable data cost.

Lack of experience of using online learning technologies is also an obstacle to effective participation in e-learning.

However, we should note that this global pandemic (COVID-19) should of course lead our Educational policy makers  to perceive that e-learning is of great advantage and should be adopted.

In whatever way, we also should note that neither learners nor teachers are ready yet.

We cannot under emphasize the contribution of the  executive Governor of Ogun State Prince Dapo Abiodun (MFR) who has introduced Virtual learning methods since the start of this global pandemic (COVID-19). This shows the level His excellent wisdom, brilliancy and knowledge to lead the state right.

Since not all decision makers in Nigeria are familiar with the emergence of e-learning, there is a need to create awareness among the decision makers to bring their attention to the potentials of the online classes in order to improve the E- learning process.

The question now is, Are we ready?
